The alley docking pole bump

Hi, my name is Sheila. I have failed my drivers test three times already; every time I seem to have a problem on the alley docking and end up bumping a pole. Please help!

From personal experience I find that a lot of new learner drivers tend to struggle with learning how to reverse a vehicle. When it comes to learning how to do alley docking, I would suggest that you just concentrate on following the curve of the poles. I know most driving schools teach methods for alley docking. I however prefer equipping my learners with skill. Always remember that where you are looking when you reverse is ultimately where you will end up going.

So if you stare at the poles you will probably end up going into one of them. The key is to focus on the space between your vehicle and the poles on the side you are busy with. Try keep about a half a meter space between your vehicle and the poles. Also look up ahead where you want the corner of the car to go. Now guide the car there. Whatever you turn on the steering wheel to go in is what you must turn back to straighten your wheel.

Let me know how it goes. Practice makes perfect.

  1. I have had the same frustrating experience thrice now and am utterly exasperated. Some of the driving schools are a real joke. The instructors pick you up smelling of booze and sit in groups shouting orders from the sides so you do not know who the order is being shouted at. The places that are used for parking lessons are also pathetic and the terrain is uneven and daunting for learner drivers. Please give me a few pointers on how to do the parkings since I have trouble with the parallel and alley docking

  2. Hello to all you trainees. I am in a what was suppose to be a four week course. There are four trainers and up to three weeks of training I barely had any skills training. All four trainers teaches different which is not good at all. At my fourth week the skills was basically shoved down my throat and I have already failed my skills two many times already. I have one more try and if I do not past it I would be kicked out of school. I will not be deterred I will succeed.

Gosh I feel like screaming, I failed my driving 2day for the 2nd time n yet again its Alley Docking, my problem is that the testing ground where I tested seems to be downhill and where I did my lessons its jus narrow. Am I allowed to brake whilst doing the Alley Docking? I was told u should never brake n I think that's where my problem lies..pls assist

    1. This is something you would need to ask your driving instructor. The K53 Manual does not make mention of braking while actually doing the Alley Docking. However you are allowed to stop during the manoeuvre and move off in the same direction, if this is done for longer than 5 seconds you would need to do another observation. You also have 2 attempts you can use to perform the manoeuvre, so if you see that you wont be able to make the turn, you are allowed to stop, move to the start again and start your 2nd attempt. Don't be afraid to ask your driving instructor what to do in these different situations, they are there to help you. Hope that helps a bit.

  5. Where you are looking when you reverse is ultimately where you will end up going. Such a good tip, thanks
